Delhi Pollution: Odd-Even Scheme Begins Monday, HC Issues Emergency Directives

NGT has banned construction and industrial activities in Delhi-NCR till November 14

NEW DELHI: The scheme will be in place starting 13th to 17th November 2017. The government had said that the system would be in place if air pollution remains above ‘severe plus’ category for 48 hours. Motorists will have to cough up Rs2,000 for violating odd-even rules.

To reduce the smog, the Supreme Court authorised EPCA has also announced a four-time hike in parking fees in Delhi and reducing Delhi Metro fares during off-peak hours.

Teams of Delhi Police, transport department and sub-divisional magistrates will be deployed to ensure strict implementation of the car-rationing scheme.

Gehlot requested the people of Delhi and all agencies to cooperate with the government as he assured them there will be no surge pricing by cab hailing companies such as Ola and Uber during the five days.

The odd-even scheme will be in place from 8am to 8pm and there will be exemption for women drivers, two-wheelers and vehicles carrying children in school uniforms, besides VVIPs, Delhi transport minister Kailash Gahlot said.

The decision comes a day after a task force of the Central Pollution Control Board suggested to the EPCA that current conditions call for GRAP measures listed for emergency situations.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had previously said that the government might reintroduce its odd-even scheme to reduce the vehicular movement.

The opposition BJP was quick to attack the Aam Aadmi Party government over the scheme and said the odd-even scheme cannot be a solution to Delhi’s high level of pollution.
